The Skyelark of London – my snazzy ride to Portugal, run Yachtmate Charters – which is the lovely Dan and Emily, the nicest and most reassuring skippers i have crewed for (and the first!)

Leaving Southhampton - look at the pretty wooden deck! (Though apparently deck is made of not so sustainably and ethically sourced tike (tique?) wood - something to consider if boats are to replace the plane in my dream of a beautiful sustainable ethical future world! (As well as the energy and other evil materials gone in to manufacture of entire boat, etc. etc.)

Wow! Your sunny excitement lifts the heart in the cold grey landscape of England, now bedding down under its first snowfall of the year. We have just come back from a few rarified days on the tip of the Lleyn Peninsula, where we found poetry in the bleakness (aided by R S Thomas), and made connections with you as we watched a lone yacht battle its way through waves and hailstorms and amazing spotlights of white-gold sunshine on the rough waters round Bardsey island. We could see two human figures on deck, huddled in oilskins, and we trust with well-trained middle ears to help them deal with the boat’s listing (does that term mean just tipping to starboard and port, or does it include nosedives into the waves?) as at times the rudder was lifted right out of the water. You are never far from our thoughts though, whether we are looking out to sea or not. Hope the second leg (fin?) of your journey brings as much honorable and well-earned bounty as the first. Mum and Dad.

    Hey Charlotte,

It sounds like you are having the time of your life, and you’ve only just started!! I am feeling so inspired reading your blog, and bang on to friends and family about your great adventure……..needless to say they are now concerned as to what is being conjured up in my head! Im glad you conquered your sickness and found your sea legs……you must be classed as a true sailly person now, I think you can send your grandparents another postcard saying you are on your way!! Anyway, good luck with the next part of your trip, have fun, stay happy and eat lots of lovely fruit!! Ange x

    Hello,

Really glad to hear that you’ve found your sea legs and have successfully managed to leave the country. It’s great to read about your adventure- and I’m shocked at Cowley (?) having poor recycling facilities- even the cathedral to capitalism (the new shires) has managed bins with multiple compartments for recycling!

Take care and please keep posting photo’s, they’re fab

So Im wandering how you are doing. I returning to england today for at least a cupple of months to work and save money before I come back to sweden to start a wooden sailing boat building course near stockholm. Ive been makeing loads of lovely friends here. That I will miss while Im away. Everyone else has left the camp weeks ago all going of ón diffrent projects that are still related to our vision of how we want to live. I want to get some sailing under my belt when Im In england so I will be llooking for a short trip here and there. Im also planing to join the forest of dean caving club just for fun. As well as continue living in the woods practising primitive skills.
